Now, that's a fine line to walk, given how naturally humans are drawn to violence. In 'Bombay Meri Jaan' we see the rise and fall of a personality about whom there are many stories and whose life has been adapted to the screen many times. It's about the rise of a police officer's son from Dongri who wants to take over the business with his D-Company in Dubai, and eventually become a 'zamindar' in Bombay or Mumbai.
Although no real names are used in the show, one wouldn't have too much trouble figuring out which real-life picture is being referenced here. Narrated by Ismail Qadri (played by the talented KK Menon), the show traces his gradual fall from grace, how he is hunted down by an 'honest' police officer, 'Shaitan' aka Haji Maqbool (Saurabh Sachdeva). is hunted is brought down. are forced to deal with). | The 10-episode series maintains momentum and is fairly consistent overall. The story follows a circular narrative, its starting and ending points are the same and Ismail Qadri takes us back in time. Narrative is used to show the audience that Darius and his siblings could have chosen the right path. The device is cleverly used not to glorify the characters. Rensil D'Silva and Sameer Arora adapted S Hussain Zaidi's 'Dongri to Dubai' and they have done a commendable job here.
It is the performances of KK Menon, Nivedita Bhattacharya and Avinash Tiwari that stand out. Menon and Bhattacharya helmed the show from the beginning, while Avinash Tiwari took over after the initial few episodes. It would not be an exaggeration to say that Menon is the protagonist of the show, while Tiwari is the anti-hero. Menon, with his exceptional talent, transforms from a proud man of principles to one forced to side with the underworld for the sake of his family. The change in his body language only accentuates his performance. His wife Sakina is played by Bhattacharya, who deftly switches between being a proud mother of her sons and them and her husband.
Avinash Tiwari took over as Dara after the first three episodes. His character is established from the beginning, but it is in episode 4 that he finally grows up. From a small loss to a challenging haji requires a clear change in body language. Tiwari played the role with a certain poignancy, adding a different dimension to Dara's character. He smooths the transition of the character and adds some ease to it with his ease. As she has proved with her other projects, she has a big screen presence that gives her a push in the show.
It may be mentioned that the character of Habiba is Kritika Kamra. The surprise package on the show is definitely Aditya Rawal, and we sincerely hope that his character will be developed if the makers are planning a sequel to the show.
Shujaat Saudagar handles his material and starcast well. The show is well made. Of course, there are some flaws here and there, but the overall experience is not that bad. As a story where the audience is aware of the outcome, Saudagar is able to retain attention. He is nostalgic for those who have lived through the era while for the rest, he is a wonderful reminder of all the other screen adaptations made on the same story. The fact that it's a series gives him room to develop his characters, and he uses it well.
All in all, if you like gangster or crime dramas, you know what to watch this weekend. This week is the festival of Avinash Tiwari, who is directing yet another OTT release Call. And the best part is that he also works with KK Menon on that show.
